Most Rev Barry Hickey

Archbishop Hickey is Archbishop of Perth and Lecturer in Social Work at the Institute. He has a Licentiate in Theology from the Urban University of Rome (1959) and both undergraduate and Masters degrees in Social Work from the University of Western Australia (1973). He was ordained a priest in 1958 and was Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Parish, Highgate, at the time of his ordination as Bishop (of Geraldton) in 1984. He was Director of Centrecare in Perth from 1973 to 1983 and Director of catholic Immigration from 1976 to 1983.

His areas of involvement have been marriage, family, counselling, ethical issues in relationships and the spiritual dimensions of counselling - for which work he was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1977. He has been a member of the Homeless Persons Advisory Committee (WA), the WA Ethnic Affairs Advisory Committee, and of the Board of the Institute of Family Studies. He recently addressed Christian Counsellors at Curtin University about the difference between St John of the Cross' "Dark Night of the Soul" and Norman Vincent Peale's "The Power of Positive Thinking".
