Hon Kevin Andrews MP
Kevin is the Federal Minister for Ageing and Member for Menzies in the House of Representatives. He is also an Adjunct Lecturer in Politics and in Marriage Education in the Institute. He has a BA and LLB from Melbourne University, and a Master of Laws from Monash. While practising law he was for many years involved with the St Vincent's Bioethics Centre, as well as the Mercy Hospital for Women, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, and the Lincoln School of Health Sciences. He was also a board member of Caritas Christi Hospice.
As a Member of Parliament Kevin successfully sponsored national legislation to override the Northern Territory's pro-euthanasia laws in 1997. He is Chairman of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee, and of the Policy Committee on Family and Community Services. In 1998, under his chairmanship, the Committee published "To Have and To Hold: Strategies to Strengthen Marriage and Relationships". Kevin also served on the Joint Select Committee on the Family Law Act which published a number of reports on divorce law and child support. He has spoken at many international conferences on family policy. He is a member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. Kevin and his wife Margaret have for many years been involved in pre-marriage education and have co-authored many books and articles on this subject, including most recently "Changing Australia: Social, Cultural and Economic Trends Shaping the Nation". They have five children, Emily, James, Stuart, Catherine and Benjamin. In 2003 we hope he will take part in teaching JP562/662 Politics of Marriage, the Family and Life and JP566/666 Bioethics and the Law at the Institute.
