The course offers an historical understanding of how the Church discerned the sacramental nature of marriage between baptized Christians. This provides a classic example of what Cardinal Newman described as "the development of Christian doctrine". In the same historical perspective, Christian marriage is presented as the source of our understanding of the Christian family. Various key thinkers who have made a distinct contribution to a Catholic understanding of marriage are presented.
