JP544/644 Beginning-of-Life Ethics
In this course we will consider the principles upon which beginning-of-life decisions are and should be made in healthcare. Contemporary controversies will be discussed (on the basis of the anthropology and ethics outlined in previous units) such as: definitions of life and of humanity; the moral status of the human embryo; the morality of abortion; the morning after pill; artificial reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization and GIFT; human cloning; foetal tissue transplants; genetic screening and pre-natal diagnosis; and animal-human hybrids.
