JP562/662 Politics of Marriage, Family and Life
Catholic teaching on marriage, family and life is the expression of an objective, universal moral order. How are these teachings to be advanced and defended in modern, pluralistic, democratic societies? Beginning with a general examination of the relationship between transcendent values and democratic institutions, this course considers the problems that face legislators, administrators and activists in building a culture of life and love in contemporary democracy. Special attention is paid to Catholic social teaching, to the growing importance of international bodies such as the United Nations, and the use some non-government organisations make of international agreements to pursue an anti-family and anti-life agenda.
