New postgrad courses for Teachers, RECs and School Counsellors
 | Dr Isabell Naumann ISSM Permanent Fellow in Systematic Theology & Mariology |
A major challenge for Catholic education is how to present marriage and family life, sexuality, relationships and life ethics, in a way that is relevant, compassionate and faithful to the Christian tradition. This is all the more difficult in an environment where many students come from complex domestic backgrounds and may not share all our values.
The John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family was recently established in Melbourne at the request of the bishops of Australia. Amongst the Institute's goals is the professional development and support of Catholic school teachers, RECs and counsellors in responding to the challenges of teaching in today's Catholic schools. It offers:
in-service seminars and workshops
individual units in values education and family studies not-for-assessment
Graduate Diploma in Marriage and Family Studies and Graduate Diploma in Bioethics
Masters in Theology (Marriage and Family) and Masters of Bioethics
Doctorates
Special provision has been made for the needs of teachers, RECs and school counsellors by allowing for majors in values education and/or family counselling. Thus the Institute will offer the best of contemporary thought from within the Catholic tradition, as well as educational theory and practice, the human sciences, and pastoral care.
Advantages of taking part in a John Paul II Institute programme:
- international visiting professors, world class local lecturers
- courses focused on life and family issues and real dilemmas in education
- variety of teaching modes, e.g. day courses, evening courses, fortnight-long intensives, weekend units, summer schools in school holidays
- small class sizes, personalized teaching
- excellent facilities and library
- Catholic environment with opportunities for spirituality along with the classes
- first class education from an internationally recognized institute with formal connections to the University of Notre Dame Perth, the Lateran University Rome, the John Paul II Institute Washington DC, etc.
Arrangements for leave and for full or part scholarships may be negotiated through your school and the Catholic Education Office.
